About This Spot

Stepping into The Auslander feels like a quiet invitation to slow down and savor moments rooted in old-world comfort. Nestled along Fredericksburg’s charming Main Street, this German restaurant and bar offers a warm, unhurried refuge where time seems to move just a little more gently. The space carries a subtle renaissance charm—a mix of vintage cuckoo clocks and well-placed paintings—that sets a tone both homey and thoughtful without overwhelming you.

The rhythm here is calm, inviting diners to linger over conversations and thoughtfully prepared plates. Whether you settle near an open window letting in Texas air or find a cozy nook inside, the atmosphere encourages a relaxed connection to the flavors and stories behind every dish. It’s the kind of place where the gentle clinks of beer mugs and soft hum of content diners create an easygoing backdrop to your meal.

Food at The Auslander is a quiet celebration of German and European classics—comfort food crafted with care and a touch of traditional heartiness. Plates arrive with the kind of attention that suggests heritage and home cooking, from golden, crisp schnitzels to rich, slow-cooked pot roasts paired with butter-soft rolls. There’s a balance of rustic charm and satisfying detail in each bite, whether it’s a tangy Reuben sandwich or a warming bowl of old-world potato soup. The beer selection, like the Weihenstephaner Kristall Weissbier, complements the menu with a light, refreshing note that feels perfectly in tune with the meal’s unpretentious spirit.

The Auslander’s welcoming air and steady service foster a sense of ease, making it a quietly reliable stop for locals and visitors drawn to Fredericksburg’s cultural heritage. It’s less about rushing through dinner and more about settling in, tasting stories in every forkful, and enjoying the company around you. For anyone seeking a sincere slice of German hospitality in the Hill Country, this spot quietly stands out with its blend of familiar flavors and gentle atmosphere.

We ordered the Schnitzel Wiener Art and the Bratwurst platters. We chose red cabbage and the German potato salad for one of the entrees and sauerkraut and potato salad for the other entree. The sides were just average. Both plates came with a warm dinner roll and some butter. The Schnitzel was nicely breaded and fried to a golden crisp. The pork cutlet was a generous portion and tasty. The bratwurst was also a large portion but was somewhat bland. A few packets of Gulden mustard were offered. Some mustard made in-house would have been a nicer touch. They had a decent selection of beers and wines. We got the H.P. Dunkel on draft and a glass of red zin, both of which paired nicely with the meal. We were too stuffed to have any dessert but they do serve apple strudel and German chocolate cake. The service was attentive and friendly. Prices were reasonable and the atmosphere was rustic but comfortable.

We enjoyed our time at The Auslander, we go to Fredericksburg a few times a year and try different restaurants, glad we tried this one. Service was awesome, and food was great. The dinner rolls are quite notable, they are very good.

We loved this restaurant! The service was awesome and the food was excellent. There was no wait time and we were given a choice of tables. We chose the open windows, which was nice and airy. The decor was fitting for the restaurant and really reminded us of the renaissance. We will definitely return!

I really enjoyed the potroast and mashed potatoes. We also got the potato pancakes which were pretty good. I tried my hubby’s chicken and it was yummy. The atmosphere in the dining room is so so. They have a couple of pretty paintings and some neat cuckoo clocks.

Ahhh... German food is comfort food for this Krautfrau. I had the Jaeger schnitzel, German Potato Salad, and sauerkraut, with a side of Chardonnay. Heavenly. Peggy had the potato soup and goulash with a side of Cab and she said it was delish. We're here for two nights, and I intend to eat here again!

The jagerschnitzel was perfect. Sauerkraut side was great. Ruladen was very tasty as well. A great place to eat, if a bit touristy and pricy, but that’s expected in these kinds of places. Overall a great meal and we’ll come back again.

What a great place to come chill and have some great food. Our server was amazing. The fried mushrooms were the biggest best appetizer ever. My dish was delicious. The meatballs were so good. I love coming here. It was such a great experience. We'll definitely be back to try more delicious meals. This made our Fredericksburg experience wonderful
